Baffle Creek Family Fishing Festival 2018

Baffle Creek Family Fishing Festival is held by the Baffle Creek Community Inc. The grounds come to life with bush-style entertainment, festivities and fun for all walks and ages, while the recreational fishers amongst us take to the fantastic waters around Baffle Creek vying for great prizes! In 2017 the competition became purely ‘Catch, Snap & Release’. Our fish stocks and the health of our river systems are important to us. Although, you are welcome to take one home for dinner!

The festival offers families and friends the opportunity to put the stresses of modern life aside to enjoy a few days with their favourite people in a truly beautiful natural environment, while providing two significant benefits to the Baffle Creek Community: a means of showcasing the magic and lifestyle of Baffle Creek to the outside world – this positive exposure is integral to nurturing opportunities for local eco-sustainable industries (eg ecotourism and fresh food production) to seed, grow and employ, and secondly, raises funds needed to maintain the Baffle Creek Community Centre – an essential facility utilised by many for sporting, educational, social, health and community care activities.

FRASER ISLAND ANNUAL TAILOR SEASON WEIGH-IN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER 2018 AT FRASER ISLAND RETREAT

The Annual Fraser Island Tailor Weigh-In was initiated in 2014 and was the brainchild of Larry Ray from Fraser Island Retreat located in Happy Valley. The aim of the competition was to raise funds for local services on Fraser Island with it’s first year raising funds for the local Ambulance Committee.

It wasn’t until 2015 when event founder Larry Ray became ill and had to be airlifted to hospital by the RACQ Life Flight Rescue Helicopter that he decided to run the annual Tailor weigh in in support of Life Flight. Larry’s one ‘free’ mission helicopter ride was said to have cost at least $12,500. The helicopter comes to the aid of Fraser Island visitors and residents several times a week when illness or injury strikes. Larry believed that fundraising for something so critical to the community of Fraser Island was an absolute no brainer.

As a local charity, RACQ Life Flight Rescue is an emergency air medical rescue helicopter service that is provided to the communities of southern Queensland 24/7 - at no cost to the patients. With an emergency response time of as little as 6 minutes and a critical care doctor, QAS paramedic, pilot and crewman on board every mission southern Queenslanders are in good hands. RACQ Life Flight has saved over 40,000 lives in the last 30 years!

Fraser Island Annual Tailor Season Weigh-In August and September at Fraser Island Retreat

The Weigh-In was initiated in 2014 to raise funds for local services on Fraser Island. In that year, the money raised supported the local Ambulance Committee. It was the brainchild of Larry Ray at Fraser Island Retreat at Happy Valley.

Although there is a prize for the heaviest fish, all legal size Tailor caught are eligible to enter. They must be cleaned (gutted) and freshly caught on rod and reel or handline – no nets or spears.

Fraser Island accommodation owners, local Hervey Bay businesses, fishing gear suppliers, 4x4 hire and those who visit the island from further afield generously donate fabulous prizes for the Major Prize as well as weekly random draws.

In 2015 when Larry became ill, he was airlifted to hospital by the RACQ CareFlight Rescue Helicopter. He was told that this one ‘free’ mission cost at least $12,500. His reaction, for which he had the support of Fraser Island Retreat, was ‘... with my recent illness and subsequent "Chopper Flight", I have decided to run this year’s "Weigh-In" with all proceeds to CareFlight.’. CareFlight comes to the aid of the vistiors and residents of Fraser Island, sometimes several times in a week, when illness or injury strikes.

One example from May 2016 - Today Bundaberg RACQ CareFlight Rescue responded to an emergency beacon on Fraser Island Island, and winched two experienced hikers to safety. Read the full story here

As a local charity, RACQ CareFlight Rescue is an emergency air medical rescue helicopter service provided to the communities of southern Queensland 24/7, at no cost to patients. With an emergency response time as little as 6 minutes and a critical care doctor and QAS paramedic, pilot and crewman on board for every mission, CareFlight Rescue has saved over 40,000 lives in the last 30 years.

Q: How can amateur fishers on Fraser Island support the Weigh-In?A: It is as simple as catch a Tailor during August and September and bring it to Fraser Islan Retreat at Happy Valley to be officially weighed. The entry fee goes directly to CareFlight. The prizes are great and everyone has the chance to win.

HISTORY The Event was kicked off by a group of amateur fishermen and women at the old Cabarita Beach Hotel in the mid-1980s and has been running for 33 years now. There were a couple of years that the event did not get a look in. Pat & June O’Keefe are the Greenback Patrons and were the people behind the first 20 odd years, as was of course the legendary Gary “Arab” Temperly. It was Arab’s fireworks that launched the fisher men, women and kids to start fishing along the gutters and estuaries from Tweed to Ballina. Then of course we cannot forget the men in the Pottsville Fishing Club Tent. That’s Richo and his merry men, who do a fantastic job checking weighing and sorting fish into the winning categories. The Cabarita Beach & Pottsville Lions Club took over the running of the Event and showcased the Event in 2006 under Lion’s Stan Dawson AO. Since that time the Lions Club has thrown itself into staging this annual Event, which benefits rescue organisations like the Cabarita Beach Surf Club and the Tweed Rescue Association (VRA) and local primary schools along the Tweed Coast. The Lions Club of Cabarita Beach & Pottsville Beach has proudly raised over $100,000 for our above beneficiaries.
